Italy: a country filled with historical sights, bustling cities, beautiful lakes and mountains, gorgeous beaches…and not forgetting the incredible cuisine, it has just about everything that makes for a wonderful holiday or city break – so it’s no wonder us Brit’s head there in our thousands most years. There really is so much to explore and enjoy!
Plus, with Italy having 4,723 miles of coastline (pretty impressive, eh?), you can rest assured there’s a lot that’s worth checking out. But with just SO much on offer, we’ve decided to focus on a couple of incredible summer destinations that are worthy of a mention…
Probably one of Italy’s most famous coasts stretches a whole 40 kilometres, and what makes the Amalfi Coast so appealing is its plunging cliffs and lush terrain. This does mean that there’s little room for long, wide beaches, but fear not – they may be compact but there’s no compromise on their appeal. You’ll find that some of the smaller beaches are only approachable by boat, making them wonderfully secluded and peaceful for quality time with your loved ones. Or if you’re looking for a bit of a buzz, head to Marina Grande in Positano, one of the larger beaches here. You’ll find glam and trendy restaurants and bars (and even a disco!) which is both popular with holiday makers and locals.
If you’re looking for day trips, our top recommendation is to do a full day tour of the Amalfi Coast and the wonderful towns it’s home to. They all have their own charm, giving you a real flavour for this southern region of Italy. End your day in Sorrento and soak up the lively atmosphere in the busy square or surrounding cobbled streets, there are restaurants and bars galore!
And for a history fix, take a half day trip to must-see Pompeii, the ancient preserved Roman city that was victim to a huge eruption of Mount Vesuvius all those years ago in 79 AD. Top tip: visit early to avoid the afternoon heat.
This is a region where rolling fields, olive groves and castles meet golden sands dreamy seaside towns. Tuscany holidays can be some of the stylish Italian breaks, where jam-packed days or pure relaxation are both on offer.
Home to one of Italy’s most famous wine region, you can expect decadent wine tastings on your holiday here – and the food won’t disappoint either! The likes of Gordan Ramsey has overseen menus here, plus there’s you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to traditional Italian cuisine.
For something extra special, Maremma in the south has an out of the ordinary charm. With unspoilt beaches, isolated Medieval hilltop towns, an artistic ambience plus some of the best seafood in Tuscany, it shows you a side of the region that many never get to see. While you’re here, don’t miss The Uccellina Nature Park – with 25 kilometres of beautiful coastline, it boasts sandy beaches, cliffs, pine forests and much more…all of which can explored by foot, bicycle, a canoe or even by donkey – a special treat for the kids!
