The beautiful island of Gran Canaria, otherwise known as a ‘Continent in miniature’ is well worth exploring. There’s plenty to do, from taking a luxury beach holiday in the south of the island and soaking up the Canarian sun at the famous Maspalmoas dunes, to spending a few days in the bustling capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. A city with an interesting heritage and charming old quarter, as well as a mouthwatering gastronomy and an array of shops to keep you busy. It’s picturesque too; head north and you’ll be spoilt for choice for scenic walks, as well as opportunities to sit under the stars at night. And did we mention, it’s blessed with warm weather all year-round?
Sound good? Let us tell you a little more about why Gran Canaria should be on the top of your holiday list.
With its thousand-year palm grove, natural lagoon, beautiful white sandy beach…and what it’s most famous for, the dunes, help make Maspalomas one of the island’s most sophisticated and stylish destinations in Europe.
Meloneras also has the wow factor, with a long oceanfront promenade that’s bursting with bars and restaurants to enjoy at lunch or at dinner time. There’s an array of boutique shops too, as well as a casino and golf course to keep you busy morning, noon and night. Sounds great to us!
Amadores is another must-visit, with a not-to-be-missed beach club and picturesque Puero Mogán, otherwise known as Little Venice – it’s well worth spending an afternoon or evening relaxing here.
If teeing off is your thing, Gran Canaria’s the perfect holiday destination. With a golfing tradition and excellent playing conditions all year around, Gran Canaria has a whole host of 18-hole courses – all within a 50-kilometre radius of each other. A favourite of ours is Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas, the first golf course in Spain and one of the oldest in Europe. A few other favourites include Meloneras Golf Course – perfect for stunning sea views, Salobre Golf Resort – the only one of the Canary Islands with two courses and Anfi Golf Course, which perfectly balances volcanic landscapes and a challenging game.
Gran Canaria is home to the largest city in the Canaries – and there’s an array of things to do in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. You’ll not only find beautiful beaches with golden sands, lively bars, top-notch restaurants and a range of hotels and apartments nearby, but there’s a fascinating historical quarter that we recommend you get stuck into too. You’ll find gorgeous cobbled streets and a variety of architectural styles, from late Gothic to Renaissance. And it doesn’t stop there – if you’re interested in culture, pay a visit to Casa de Colon Mansion, Museo Canario and the Santa Ana Cathedral, it’ll be well worth it.
We love the cuisine in Gran Canaria. With a wide range of gastronomical delights available, there’s something to suit all taste buds. And what’s great is many of the traditional recipes are locally-sourced with beautifully fresh and natural ingredients – but with a modern twist. It’ll be sure to awaken your senses! From markets with fresh food and restaurants converted from traditional stalls to high-end brasseries, it’s all available. And what’s more, the island joined the Saborea España Association, giving talented, young chefs the opportunity to get creative with the local cuisine – so watch out for that in future months and years!
And we've not even touched on the accommodation yet. One thing's for sure, you're spoilt for choice when it comes to accommodation in Gran Canaria. Each year, we see more boutique hotels with high-tech amenities, resorts with a special focus on healthy living and wellbeing popping up as well as larger luxury hotels and resorts open up.
